Berne Union Elementary Receives $5,000 Grant For STEM Classroom

SUGAR GROVE, Ohio – Melissa Sheets, elementary science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) teacher at Berne Union Elementary School, was awarded an Innovation Grant of $5,000 from the Ohio Education Association (OEA) Educational Foundation.

The Innovation Grant will be used to introduce kindergarteners to coding through active play using LEGO® coding sets and coding mats. Lesson plans are included with the teaching packages to assist in educating children about the alphabet, counting, and other academic topics. With the aid of these electronic learning toys, children can also learn the foundational concepts of coding.

“Equipping students with advanced problem-solving skills requires exposing them to technology that enhances their understanding of coding and programming,” said Melissa Sheets, elementary STEM teacher at Berne Union Elementary School. “This new educational resource will expand our young learners’ horizons through hands-on experiences that foster opportunities in technology and critical thinking.”

The Ohio Educational Foundation's mission is to provide funding for programs that advance social justice and improve student learning, achievement, and well-being. Every year, the board of directors offers four funding opportunities for diversity grants, innovation grants, whisper grants for students in need, and a Make-A-Wish® grant.
