May is National Bike Month, May 12-16 is National Bike to Work Week, and Friday May 16 is National Bike to Work Day. The Fairfield Heritage Trail Association (FHTA) is asking your business to encourage employees to ride their bikes to work during the B2WW and especially on B2W Day.

Bicycling has many benefits, health and economic, and a cyclist employee is likely a more productive and attentive employee.

Why have a Bike-to-Work Week?
… to educate the community that bicycles are a beneficial mode of transportation
… to make basic information on bicycle commuting available to potential riders
… to encourage people to try bicycle commuting
… to increase the general public's awareness and respect for bicyclists

Some businesses hold competitions during B2WW: farthest commute to work, most miles traveled during the week, most number of days cycling to work. Competitions require an organizer who is willing to promote cycling and to record the data. Many businesses also simply ask employees to ride their bicycles for the fun and benefits of riding. However you choose to promote B2WW and B2WD, we applaud your efforts.

B2WW begins Monday May 12 and concludes Friday May 16 with National B2W Day. On Monday evening at 6:30, join Lancaster Mayor David Smith, Chief of Lancaster Police Dave Bailey and Fairfield County Sheriff Dave Phalen and cyclists of all stripes will meet at the Fairfield County Fairgrounds and ride through downtown. Tuesday is Bike to Dinner Night at several restaurants. Thursday is Bike to School Day and that evening from 4:30-7:30, a Kids Bike Rodeo will be held at the Fairgrounds. Friday is Bike to Lunch Day at Four Reasons, where cyclists from all over town can meet and share their experiences with one another.

We hope you’ll encourage your employees to try a new old mode of transportation during National Bike to Work Week, May 12-16. You’ll see a difference in them and in the workplace. Maybe a few of them will even start to ride frequently, and the changes in workplace productivity will dramatically increase.

Small Business Committee Chamber Member Employee Recognition Program

On April 3rd, Judy Callahan of Diapers to Desks was presented with the March Small Business Committee Employee Recognition Award for favorite Educator - Daycare - 6th! Judy operates her business from her home and has partnered with her daughter Allison. Together they provide care for children of working parents in an extremely structured, loving environment. The program, which is available for all age ranges, is run much like a pre-school environment.
